6th Thematic Network Workshop on Small Hydropower: SHP in Developing Countries. 18th October 2005. Villach, Austria
SHP in Developing Countries
The European Small Hydropower Association has organised 2 hour Workshop of its Thematic Network on Small Hydropower, entitled "Small Hydropower a solution for Sustainable Development: experiences in Europe and markets in Developing Countries", chaired by Christine Lins, Secretary General of ESHA.
- In developing countries, the economic growth and the increase in energy needs are driving factors for renewable energy development. Small hydropower is a highly suitable option for meeting the electrification demand in these countries. Asia, specially China and India, is affirming itself as a leading continent in developing its hydro resources, some Latin American countries have also been active in developing new projects, and Africa, where only 5% of hydro potential has been exploited so far, gives good opportunities for a market uptake of small hydropower, being in most cases the most suitable renewable energy solution for rural electrification in developing countries.
- The ESHA workshop will analyse the current situation of SHP at an international level, the advantages of SHP for rural electrification and the factors that will allow the European industry to participate in the market development of SHP in these countries.
